Why strength training is the most important thing you can do for your body

Strength and conditioning has an image problem. For too long it has been associated with bodybuilders, athletes, and people who already know what they are doing. The truth is almost the opposite.

S&C training is the single most effective form of exercise for long-term health. It builds and preserves muscle mass as you age. It strengthens connective tissue, tendons, and ligaments, reducing the risk of injury in everyday life. It improves bone density, metabolic health, balance, and coordination. It protects your joints rather than wearing them down. Done correctly, it is one of the most joint-friendly forms of exercise available.

The research is consistent and growing. Progressive resistance training is strongly associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and all-cause mortality. It supports mental health. It improves sleep. It keeps you functional, independent, and capable well into later life.

At Atlas, we want to change the perception of what a strength gym looks like and who it is for. Our facility is designed for every age, every ability, and every goal. The equipment supports sound movement and progressive overload across all levels. The staff are here to guide you, not to judge you.

The gym

Two floors. One purpose.

Atlas is 9,000 square feet across two floors, with every inch designed for progressive, intelligent training. Both floors are fully staffed. Our team is here to support you, not tied up with paying clients. Approach them. Ask questions. That's what they're here for.

technique floor

Upstairs, spacious, confidence-building, and equipped with pin-selected machines, cardio with multimedia streaming, a turfed HIIT area, power racks, and saunas in both changing rooms. It's where you learn, refine, and build capability.

performance floor

Downstairs, heavy free weights and plate-loaded machines. It's where intent meets load. The free-weight zone isn't visible from reception by design. We want new members to feel welcomed, not overwhelmed.

HIIT and Cardio

Cardio that earns its place on the floor

At Atlas, cardio equipment is chosen with the same scrutiny as everything else. If a machine does not serve a clear purpose, it does not take up floor space. There are no banks of identical cross-trainers or rows of upright bikes here.

What we do have is a short but exceptional selection of cardio and conditioning equipment, each chosen because it does something genuinely useful.

Treadmills with multimedia streaming

Train at your own pace with full access to Netflix and other streaming services. Long steady-state sessions become considerably more manageable.

Freemotion Coach Bikes

Choose a route and ride it. Freemotion's virtual cycling experience allows you to ride roads and trails anywhere in the world, with resistance that responds to the terrain. A completely different experience to a standard exercise bike.

Jacobs Ladder

One of the most effective full-body conditioning tools available. Low impact, high output, and genuinely challenging. A favourite among serious athletes for good reason.

Punch Bags

Available as part of the turfed HIIT area on the technique floor, the punch bags add an upper body conditioning element to circuit training that most gym floors simply don't offer.

Sled Track

The sled track is one of the most versatile conditioning tools in the facility. Push for speed, pull for strength, or use it as a finisher after a heavy lower body session. Joint-friendly, scalable, and brutal in the best possible way.

HIIT Circuits

Our HIIT circuits run on the gym floor and use the full range of conditioning equipment available. They are the only class format we offer at Atlas. No dance fitness. No trends. Just structured, effective work led by a member of our coaching team.

One-to-one coaching

Dedicated support when you are ready for it

Our gym floor is staffed throughout the day by coaches available to every member, free of charge. When you want something more structured, personal training at Atlas gives you a dedicated coach built around your goals, your body, and your schedule.
